Experiencing Problems in Making the Right Choices? Get in Touch with your Inner Self
‘The thing about meditation is that you become more and more you’ David Lynch

What is Meditation?
Meditation is the art of quieting the mind and turning your concentration inward. Research indicates that on an average, we have about 60,000 thoughts in a day. We do not even notice the incessant internal chatter. Everyday worries about job, family, stressful relationships and financial tensions can lead to thousands of negative thoughts.

These negative thoughts have a snowball effect in that one thought triggers another and the next and so on. Meditation helps us silence the mind and minimise self-destructive internal chatter. Meditation is an excellent natural health tool that helps counteract what is known as a ‘negativity bias’. Negativity bias implies that we have a tendency to focus on negative emotions over positive ones.

Meditation helps you get in touch with the peaceful space inside you with conscious attention to your thoughts. The idea behind meditation is to reprogram the thinking process and stimulate ‘mindfulness’ or living in the moment. Contrary to popular opinion, it has absolutely nothing to do with any religion; it has to do with getting in touch with who you really are.

The practice of meditation helps you observe your thoughts without judging them. As our thoughts slow down, we notice that there is a small space between one thought and the next. Meditation trains you to get into this empowering and extremely powerful space between thoughts.

When we focus on our breath, an object or even a mantra, we learn to live in the moment instead of indulging in regrets about the past or worries about the future.

The body already knows how to retire into its own quiet place, all we need to do is to give it the right opportunity. Mornings and evenings are better for meditation as those times of the day coincide with the body’s natural rhythms.

What are the Benefits of Meditation?
Meditation is associated with numerous benefits including improved memory, enhanced creativity and better concentration. Other natural health benefits include relaxation and minimisation of stress levels. Meditation is also known to be effective in the treatment of stress-related conditions including anxiety, insomnia and depression.

Physical health benefits include reduction in hypertension and cholesterol levels (which are again triggered due to stress).

Meditation is a holistic, natural health modality that helps us move away from knee-jerk reactions to stressful situations.
